INFO THAT YOU NEED TO KNOW - FACTS ABOUT KIDNEY:
The body's thousand of internal chemical processes, which work together, are known as its METABOLISM. This produces wastes of many kinds. Two main systems get rid of such body wastes. The digestive system removes not only bits of leftover and undigested food, but also some wastes of metabolism. The other waste disposal system is the urinary system whose main organs are the kidneys. The kidneys (shaped like beans), are two fist-sized organs, located on either side of your spine just above the waist. Health kidneys handle several specific, life-sustaining roles within your body;
- Maintain your body's balance of water and concentration of minerals such as sodium, potassium, magnesium and phosphorus in your body,
- Remove waste by-products from the blood after digestion, muscle activity, and exposure to chemicals or medications,
- Produce renin, an enzyme that helps regulate blood pressure,
- Produce erythropoietin, which stimulates red blood cell production,
- Produce an active form of vitamin D, needed for bone health,
- The kidneys are suchincredible well-functioning organs that only normal, healthy kidney is required for good health,
- Each kidney is 4 - 5 inches long, weighs about 6 ounces, and contains about 1 million nephrons. Nephrons are the working units of the kidney that are responsible for waste removal,
EXCRETION AND DIGESTION
- About one-fifth of the blood pumped out by the heart goes to the two kidneys. Inside each kidney are about 1 million tiny filters called nephrons. These take waste substances from the blood, along with excess water, to form urine.
IT'S A FACT
The kidneys receive more blood for their size almost any other body organ - about 1.2litres every minute.
All the body's blood flows through the kidneys more than 300 times a day!!
